Welcome to BirdCare Aotearoa

NZ’s largest Wild Bird Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre

We are a charity based in Green Bay, Auckland. We are funded entirely by donations – please help!

Our native bird hospital services the greater Auckland region, extending as far as Northland and the Waikato. We also provide phone support and advice to organisations and the public nationwide.

Found a bird?

Our dedicated team of wildlife rehabilitators, academic researchers and consulting vets ensures each bird receives expert care and rehabilitation. We rely on the support of a large team of dedicated volunteers to help run the centre, and engage with the community with education, advocacy and events.

Blackbird and song thrush chicks

DOC, Council, Watercare and other organisations rely on us to take in many of the native wild birds they receive, on top of the high number we receive directly from the public. BirdCare Aotearoa assists all native wild birds brought in and is fully DOC-permitted for endangered and at-risk species.

Our impact spans animal abuse investigations, environmental research, and education. Help us sustain these vital efforts. Your support will help us to save the lives of rescued wild birds, and contribute to conservation of NZ’s special birdlife.

Our Need: Our aviaries are crucial to our mission but many are in urgent need of repair, and new ones need to be built. Your expertise in building and maintenance can make a real difference.

The Mission: As we care for an increasing number of birds, the demand on our facilities grows. Your role in maintaining and expanding our aviaries is essential to our success as a bird hospital.

Your Role: You’re not just volunteering; you become a vital part of BirdCare Aotearoa. Your work in repairing and constructing aviaries ensures our hospital remains a safe sanctuary for our feathered patients.

The Impact: Your contribution will directly affect the lives of thousands of wild birds, aiding in their recovery and return to the skies and oceans. You’ll be making a significant difference in both their lives and the health of our local ecosystem.

Volunteering opportunities

BirdCare Aotearoa is currently in search of more volunteers, in particular for helping to care for maintenance, building, and raising bugs. We are also seeking volunteers for select days to help in our main hospital.

If you or anyone you know may be interested in joining our team as a volunteer, and are based in Auckland, over 18 years of age, and available for a minimum of one 5-hour shift per week, please click here to find the list of currently available volunteer roles or email volunteer@birdcareaotearoa.org.nz for more information.

Volunteering roles are hugely rewarding, and are essential to the operation of BirdCare Aotearoa. Full training is provided in relation to bird handling and care. We are extremely grateful for the support of all of our wonderful volunteers, we couldn’t do this without you.

Ways to support us

As a charity, we rely entirely on the support of our wonderful donors and partners.

If you would like to support us financially, there are many ways you can contribute. You can make a one-off donation, become a monthly donor, treat your family or friends to a gift certificate, or donate items or services from our wish list.
