A massive thanks to Gree New Zealand and Realcold NZ Ltd for donating two Gree Weka Hi-wall airconditioning units for our nurseries! Another huge thanks to Koolmakers for the installation of the units!

It’s so important to be able to control the temperature in our nurseries to keep our patients comfortable even in the summer heat. In previous years, we have resorted to spraying our patients with water constantly, and aiming fans over containers of ice. We couldn’t be happier with the new Weka units, which are quiet and extremely efficient. This is a donation which will have a huge impact.

Check out their new range of units, which have awesome names: Weka range (available now) and Kōtare and Kea (coming in 2024)!

Thank you to Pub Charity for funding $10,800 towards one of our Native Nursery team members!

The funding provided for one of our native bird nursery team member’s wages contributed to the successful raising of hundreds of orphaned native chicks at BirdCare Aotearoa.A few examples of native chicks which were raised by our dedicated team are tūī, ruru/moreporks, kererū/NZ (wood) pigeons, kōtare/kingfishers, pīwakawaka/fantails, pipiwharauroa/shining cuckoo, tahou/silvereyes, riroriro/grey warblers, kahu/swamp harrrier (hawk), moho pereru/banded rail and various seabirds and shorebirds such as penguins, terns, shags, pied stilts, herons, and many native ducklings and cygnets.

This wonderful funding helped BirdCare Aotearoa to support the community and save the lives of orphaned taonga birds, it is greatly appreciated!

BirdCare Aotearoa would like to give a huge thank you to Kärcher Home & Garden for donating a professional steam cleaner, commercial grade wet & dry vacuum cleaner, and a quiet, compact dry vacuum cleaner for using in the hospital. The equipment was specially delivered to us by a Technical Sales Representative to show us how to use it!

We are extremely grateful for Kärcher’s generous support and for making it so much easier for us to keep everything nice and clean around the centre!

A big thank you to two very special girls!

BirdCare Aotearoa would like to thank sisters Scarlett (10) and Mila (7) who raised $510 from their fundraiser at St Joseph’s school in Orakei www.facebook.com/sjorakei

Scarlett and Mila sold chocolate chip cookies, lolly cakes and homemade lemonade. They love animals, and have also fundraised for the SPCA in the past.

St Joseph’s school is a little school with a very big heart, teachers and parents fully supported the initiative and were very impressed with Scarlett and Mila’s commitment.

The team at BirdCare Aotearoa are very grateful to these wonderful girls for their dedication and support of the care of precious wild birds. Their donation will help to feed a lot of hungry baby birds this summer!

Introducing a new website www.protectourpetrels.com coordinated by BirdCare Aotearoa team member and University of Auckland PhD student Ariel-Micaiah Heswall along with other passionate individuals, with the goal of promoting the conservation of Aotearoa’s native seabirds.

Driven by a passion to conserve seabirds, Protect Our Petrels began in 2022 when Auckland community members decided that enough was enough. Aotearoa is a seabird capital and sadly our seabirds are impacted heavily by us. It’s time to raise awareness and bring about changes to help protect and conserve our seabirds.

Tabletop exercise was a success

Wildlife Welfare – Creating Preparedness for a Potential Catastrophic Weather Event.

Wildlife welfare is now incorporated in the Civil Defence ‘Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS)’. BirdCare Aotearoa recently coordinated a Tabletop exercise to build preparedness for a catastrophic weather event impacting wildlife.

Delegates from various organisations worked together during a simulated exercise to develop a strategy for coordinating the rescue and appropriate care of wildlife in a large-scale emergency situation. It was a very valuable collaboration of expertise amongst a group of organisations who recognise the importance of wildlife welfare in all situations.
